Kosrae 4-H Club & Community Gardening
Mangilao, GUAM – On February 18, 2017, Guam’s 4-H Youth Development Program hosted the Kosrae 4-H Club in participating in their community gardening activity at the University of Guam. The Kosrae 4-H Club is a 23 member club that values the 4-H movements in providing opportunities for youth to develop skills they can use now and throughout their life.
During the community gardening activity the Republic of Palau Student Organization Youth Committee worked along-side with the Kosrae 4-H Club to promote the 4-H Life Skills of Personal Safety, Nutrition, Teamwork, Cooperation and Resilience that target the 4 fundamentals of the program: Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Opportunities like this help make positive impacts on the lives of our community’s youth, their families and our society. The 4-H program focuses on enlightening the younger generations in developing skills that will help them with planning and working for individual and community change. Community gardening, one of many of the activity opportunities that 4-H offers, maintains the essential elements of 4-H, belonging, generosity, mastery and independence. These elements provide youth to build a connection with one another, develop self-confidence, provide meaning and purpose, and know that as youth in the community they can influence people and events through positive decision-making and actions.
