A Framework for Secondary Schools Agriscience Education Programs that Emphasizes the STEM Content in Agriculture

      Email: diambraodih@triton.uog.edu
      Phone: 735-2141
      Project Status: Ongoing
    Start Date: November 17, 2014
Original End Date: May 31, 2017

    Funding

Funding Source Funding Year Funding Amount
Hatch-Multistate-National Institute of Food and Agriculture 2014 $10,000.00

      Issue Statement

There is a shortage of scientists for agricultural positions across the United States of America and its territories, and data from CSREES Employment Opportunities for College Graduates projected a deficit of nearly 3,000 graduates per year for 2015. Ignoring this issue will slow down food and agriculture production and fail to keep pace with an increasing population growth. In order to increase the number of students transitioning in post-secondary agricultural education and employment, we need to focus on career exploration and preparation. Surveys will be conducted among secondary school students before and after a presentation on careers in food and agriculture. Data will be analyzed by statistical methods to evaluate the impact of the presentation on student perceptions and behaviors about careers in food and agriculture. It is expected that students who learned about career opportunities in food and agriculture would be more favorable in majoring in these disciplines in college.
