Safety is Key in Everything We Do
Sinajana, GUAM – On May 9th, 4H mentors visited CL Tatiano’s 4th grade class to construct the set up for their class garden. Excitedly the students awaited their field project to properly begin the set up and structure tire beds and flower pots. Prior to the Life Skill Activity, the students learned the importance of Personal Safety with a focus on Garden Safety. 4H Mentors, discussed with the students the main reasons that personal safety is a must as they grow older. When teaching the students about personal safety we always remind
them that it is not just on physical safety, but emotional safety as well. The stress of personal safety with the students is vital for them to know very early on in life because we do not want to influence them that the world is a dangerous place, but we want them to be cautious with everything they do so that they can do it efficiently, effectively in a safe and healthy environment.
Youth today are exposed to so much information through friends, family and social media, that they lose sight of what it means to be a child. Through personal safety we can teach these students and remind them that with everything they do, there are always precautions they must take in order to be safe. 4H mentors, focused on instilling the awareness of personal safety by relating it to fun activities such as sports, school, and personal hobbies that youth today are interested in. After the presentation the students were allowed to proceed outside their classroom and apply everything they have learned with the 4H program, all focusing on personal safety.
