Dr. Jim McConnell emailed the following message with this photo of a passion fruit flower attached:
“I was trying out a new lens. When I looked at this I saw the there were droplets around this fruit and that it looks like insects were getting stuck in it. Do you think that is what is happening?”
I had not observed this phenomenon before, but a few minutes of googling turned up this interesting article which may explain what is happening:
