Palau Youth Club 1st General Meeting
On December 1, 2017, the 4-H Program hosted its first general meeting for their up and coming Palau Youth Club. The Palau Youth Club is one of the many community clubs to begin on Guam under the 4-H Program. The Palau Youth Club is designated for youth on Guam ages 9 through 18. Their goal is create a club that builds responsible citizens and future leaders for a better tomorrow. This is done through instilling the necessary skills and education to empower them to become leaders within their community, our island, and the world! Youth are able to access numerous opportunities through the club such as STEAM Learning, Cultural Awareness, Core Curriculum Tutoring, Career Path Learning, Healthy Living, Citizenship & Leadership, Life Skills, & Character Building and Bridging the Knowledge: Between Elders and Youth.
Palau Youth’s Club first general meeting included parents and youth. Where they learned what our program and club has to offer. With 10 youth members registered that evening, the Palau Youth Club is off to a great start. Youth and Parents actively participated in discussion about youth issues and goals they wish to meet through the club. At a glimpse youth and parents envisioned what their children will be doing in the club. At the end of the evening, youth members participated in the Life Skill lesson and Activity. Life Skill lessons and activities are what makes the 4-H Program and its clubs unique. Unlike other youth programs members learn different Life Skills during every workshop and partake in activities that allow them to practice the designated Life Skills. During Palau Youth Club’s meeting the designated Life Skill was Teamwork. Youth learned what this was and how to apply it in different areas in life such as school, home, and the community. The hands on learning portion of this lesson included one of 4-H’s favorite games, Cooperation Dots, through this activity youth learned to work together and incorporate communication and cooperation skills in order to be effective in teamwork. After the activity youth members discussed what struggles they encountered, how they resolved their issues and how they accomplished their goal as a team.
The Palau Youth Club’s first general meeting was overall a success. As we venture on to completing our club’s goals and objectives we expect more youth members and parents to involve themselves in our club. With parental support and our goals we are making a difference in the lives of our members, their families and the community.
