E2 Workshop Series: Empowering and Engaging Youth – Healthy Living with Jesse Rosario of Boka Box & CrossFit Jumpstart
Mangilao, GUAM – University of Guam hosted there monthly 4H E2 Workshop Series: Empowering and Engaging Youth focused on Healthy Living. This workshop focused on Healthy Living and Decision Making skills for youth in our community. 4H Youth Development and Outreach Program invited Mr. Jesse Rosario. Rosario is a former employee with our program and is the current owner of Boka Box and head instructor at CrossFit Jumpstart, as well as youth mentor during our Healthy Living Workshop. Mr. Rosario inspired the kids to live a better lifestyle by being active and making healthy life choices. As a former 4H employee and Youth Mentor, Mr. Rosario understands that this is a critical time in a child’s development to influence healthy life choices to better them in the future. With his expertise in teaching fitness and nutrition in the last 15 years, Jesse was the ideal candidate to speak to our youth members about healthy living.
Mr. Rosario taught the students the importance of being physically fit and eating healthy. After his presentation, the youth were able to practice different CrossFit exercises they can do at home to keep them fit. Along with exercising Mr. Rosario stressed the importance of healthy eating. Youth today rarely eat a well-balanced meal and tend to prefer fast food, snacks high in fats, sugar and sodium. Affecting their growth and future health. Mr. Rosario was able to teach and prep a meal for the students that taught them alternative ingredients to healthy meals that still taste extremely well. Focused on the “local diet” Mr. Rosario taught the students how to make a healthy delicious alternative to fried rice.
The main reasons for us to teach youth on Healthy Living is to encourage them to make the right choices at a young age. Healthy Living should start during a young age for them to develop the habits early in life because further along it will be difficult to change. It also allows us to bring awareness to the youth to decrease the rush of serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease which are occurring in younger adults and youth and are related to poor dietary habits and lack of exercise. The 4H Program aims to empower youth to be better versions of themselves by being physically, mentally, socially and emotionally healthy. Our Healthy Living Workshop focuses these characteristics by inviting youth onto a new path where each characteristic can be targeted through healthy life choices such as physical activity and proper decision making habits.
